What does EAP stand for?

EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program. EAPs are special programs that employers may offer to help you with both personal and work problems. These programs are private and can offer employees things like counseling, financial advice, and legal help. 

How does an EAP work?

An EAP is an extra benefit that your employer may provide at no cost to you. An EAP’s services are often through a separate company, which helps keep them private and confidential. 

You can access EAP help by telehealth, phone, or in person, making it easy for you to get the support you need. There may be limits on how many times you can meet with a network therapist or counselor, so make sure to read all details of your EAP coverage. In general, here's how an EAP typically works:

  • Access and Referral - An employee can connect directly with EAP services as part of their benefits, if available. Depending on the situation, a manager may also suggest an employee seek some EAP assistance.

  • Assessment - You may have an initial meeting or call with someone from the EAP to talk about your issue and what kind of support you may need.

  • Intervention and Support - Based on your needs, you may be recommended for short-term counseling, referrals to experts, or other forms of support.

  • Follow-up and Monitoring - Your therapist, counselor, or support person will check back with you to see how you're doing. They may recommend further assistance.

Talk to a licensed counselor or therapist to help with stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues at no cost to you. While an EAP does not cover psychiatry or medication management, the short-term counseling services offered can be beneficial. In some cases, the EAP counseling may be all that is needed to get resolution. If additional counseling support or more specialized treatment is needed, the EAP will help you access your behavioral coverage under your insurance.

Who qualifies for an EAP?

You're qualified for an EAP if your employer offers an EAP as part of your benefit package, whether or not you have employer-sponsored medical coverage. Depending on the employer and the EAP, your dependents, family members, or household members may also be able to access EAP services. Always read the details of your EAP benefits to confirm who qualifies under your EAP.
